I am Juuso Korhonen, and I work as a technical team lead in our Partner Systems business unit. My team is located in Espoo and we work with customer projects using Wonderware software components, delivering manufacturing execution systems.
Why did you choose Roima?
My history with Roima dates back to March 2011, when I joined a company called Delta Enterprise (that then later on was acquired to Roima). Before that I had worked for Borealis Polymers with online quality control systems since 2007. That was a more corporate environment and I wasn’t entirely happy with that. So, I started looking for a smaller company, because I really felt the need to be able to utilize my potential more. Being an eager young professional, I also felt I need to make a change to maximize my professional development. Here I have been able to play the whole field, learn and use new technologies and develop myself.
So when I started in 2011, we were 14 people in the company, and now (April 2019) we are 267. It’s been a long way, but a great ride in good company. I’ve seen all of the growth from a very small engineering office into what Roima is now: a multi-location company with a versatile offering. In sports terms we have moved from little league to the professional series. Yet we have been able to keep the initial warm team-spirit, closeness and our down-to-earthedness despite the growth. These days I am a proud shareholder of Roima, and that also means a lot to me.
What is the everyday work like here at Roima?
Well, that is always a tough question to answer as in my role there is no typical day. But I’ll try anyway, in an average day there are a few meetings with the team and/or customers. Otherwise there is a lot of planning and designing, wrestling with different complex issues (also known as problem-solving), and actual technical development resulting from all of that. In our team we dig deep into our customers manufacturing processes and those are really challenging and interesting.
Since we are working with a commercial platform linking to our customers production processes, that adds a layer of creativity as we have to be able to go beyond the possible limitations of the platform to truly deliver value. Also our projects are quite varied, we work within different industries and for different time periods, anything ranging from one month to several years.
The people that I get to work with are definitely the sharpest tools in the toolbox! Most are really active also outside of work, almost everyone has a passion or an interest they are dedicated to. For some it’s doing sports (cycling for me!), for others music or doing their own technical projects. When we hangout socially it can be anything from a company organized sports-events to grabbing a beer together after work. The bottom line is, that we also like to have fun with each other.
Values
The values I see we are living true in the every day life are reliability, customer-dedication, and helping others. If you are thinking of joining my team, or Roima, those are the values that you’ll hopefully subscribe to as well. Also in order to be happy here, you’ll need to be into understanding systems and industrial processes on a higher level. We work with quite complex issues, and we are really dedicated to our clients. I mean, we view it is as a question of honor and of personal professional integrity, to deliver to our customers what we have promised.
We have daily contact with our customers, and thus have a truly co-operative relationship with them. This is something that I think most of us here enjoy, because it means we are really involved in the customers core business. And it brings a lot of meaning to our work.
From my personal experience as a developer I can say, that I am happy here, since I am not a website- flashy-developer guy, but a systems guy. For me, it’s great to see the machines moving and producing and giving out data that will build real business. In general I’d say, that in order to be happy at Roima, you have to be into the manufacturing industry. And if you are, whether you are a guy or gal possessing problem-solving skills and some technical capabilities such as .NET or SQL, this might be right up your alley. As a team lead, in a growing business area, I am really interested in hearing more about you!
Professional development and work-life balance at Roima
At Roima, there are a lot of opportunities available, but also you yourself have to possess the drive to take yourself forward. People have joined us from a variety of backgrounds, and I see that as a strength. Most people have a higher education degree in engineering (computer science, automation), or the same from college-level. But I don’t view that as a must, since I know there are some rough diamonds out there, who have developed their skills by doing and working.
To me, the most important thing is that you are always ready to challenge yourself and develop yourself. No one can call themselves ready, as the technological landscape changes all the time. This means also, that there is a lot of room for learning and making mistakes, and the way we deal with them here, is that we try not to make the same mistakes twice (learn fast). As a team we take care of each other and and I think we form a social community where you can be yourself and feel good about yourself.
As a parent I really value the way of working we have here. We are free to work where ever we want, and we trust our people. I think the big reason for this, is, that we have been able to hire people, who share the customer-dedication as their core value. That keeps us going, and helps us scale our size.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work for Roima?
If income wouldn’t play a role I would be fishing in a warm place. But seriously taken, most likely I would be working in some similar company or position. The challenge is that there aren’t that many around, so I am happy I landed here.
